Winifred (“Pinky”) Strange, a pioneer in cross-language speech perception research, died on Jan. 25, 2025, after two battles with cancer. She was a Professor Emerita at CUNY’s Graduate Center. She won the Silver Medal of The Acoustical Society of America in 2008.

From Cathi Best, Jan. 25, 2024: “Dear friends and colleagues: It is with sadness that I share the passing of dear colleague, collaborator and friend Winifred Strange, who has left us after two battles with cancer. Winifred was prolific in cross-language speech perception research, a great supporter and trainer of young researchers, particularly young women, and an exemplary citizen of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and of our field. She won the Silver Medal of the Acoustical Society in 2008 (in esteemed company, including Anne Cutler and numerous other well-known figures in speech research). She was big-hearted, fun-loving, and full of dancing, singing and problem-solving energy (and sometimes of political opinions). She will be so greatly missed.”

From Doug Whalen, Jan. 26, 2024: “Winifred “Pinky” Strange has passed away after a long battle with cancer. If you wish to support her family, below is a link. There will be a memorial session at CUNY at a later time. She was a true force of nature and will be greatly missed.”
